Andrew Potter, MNAEA (Overseas)

Managing Director of United Developers

Andrew was born in July 1970, at St Mary’s hospital in Armley, Leeds. After attending Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley, West Yorkshire he went to work for Presto Superstores as a trainee manager at the age of 16. At his time at the supermarket chain he learnt many vital lessons which keep him in good stead today. One of those lessons is never to keep stock too long! His next job was with Shires Bathrooms, Guiseley, West Yorkshire in the marketing department.

This is where Andrew got his first taste for marketing and publicity. His job was two fold, one was to ensure the sales reps and the distributors had all the marketing materials they needed and the other was to speak to clients looking at upgrading their bathroom suites. This was Andrew’s first opportunity to speak with the consumer on the telephone (no emails in the late eighties). During his time at Shires Bathrooms, he continued his education at Park Lane College and then Leeds Polytechnic (latterly Leeds Metropolitan University) on a part time basis. Andrew later achieved a marketing diploma and HND.

A chance conversation with his cousin who lived in Hong Kong, lead to Andrew joining a small lettings firm in Leeds in 1992. By the mid nineties (and whilst the housing market had crashed to a level not seen since the late seventies) Andrew went to London to work for his aunt's lettings and sales agency on the Old Kent Road. His aunt made a huge impact on the twenty something Andrew.

Andrew says, “My aunt taught me many things about the lettings and sales business in south London, one comment still with me today, she said “people have complexes, we sell residences”, it still makes me cringe when people tell me they are selling their latest complex”.

Andrew speaking on Swedish TV

After a returning to Leeds for a short time, Andrew went to work on the Costa del Sol, Spain. He worked for a verity of agents and developers. His first job was to organise and implement an international exhibition schedule which included the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Dubai and Hong Kong. His duties also included leading, training and motivating sales teams in Spain, Bulgaria and Turkey.

Since returning from Spain headed the Hunters Overseas Homes Network, a collection of over 150 estate agents throughout the UK. Andrew has also been commissioned by a number of Bulgarian and Turkish developers within a consultancy role to train sales personnel. Many of the developers found their closing rate increased from 22% to over 90%. This was achieved by introducing high service standards and training the local sales staff in understanding the northern European mentality.

In the summer of 2008, Andrew set up Andrew Potter Ltd as a channel to deliver marketing, training and sales services to international property developers.

As a member of the National Association of Estate Agents Andrew is bound by their code of conduct and is required to have professional indemnity insurance. Andrew Potter Ltd is also proud members of Leeds Chamber of Commerce and the Institute of Directors.
